Hey Guys

Well Iīm down here in Costa Rica finally.

Here are some interesting things about the culture here though

The sun rises around 5:30 here so most people get up much earlier than in the US, it actually sets around the same time as home.

Meals are quite a bit different here.  Black beans and rice is by far the most common meal.  It isnīt unusual to have black beans and rice as at least a part of all three meals in your day.  Usually you have something with them though.  Often chicken, but we do get beef here too.

We also get a lot of fresh tropical fruit, such as Pineapple and Bananaīs.  And some that we donīt have a home like papaya, and star fruit.  We also have fruit juices quite often.

The family is the center of peopleīs world here, so most of the time kids will live with their parents right up until they get married.  It isnīt uncommon for a 30 year old man to still live at home with his parents if heīs not married.

A few pictures for you

A banana tree, there are about three or four types of bananas here, each tasting different and growing at different times in the year.

Coffee beans, this is one of Costa Rica’s most important crops.  They ship their coffee all over the world.

This is a pineapple plant, my favorite fruit here.  There are two types of this fruit.  One is the yellow kind you have probably gotten out of a can at home, the other is white on the inside and is sweeter than the yellow.

San Jose is in a valley, which means it is surrounded by mountains.  This makes the weather a little cooler and pretty constant.  Also it doesn’t rain that much in San Jose during the dry season, partly because of the mountains.
